1. Islands and bridges

Venice is formed of 124 islands, these are connected by more 400 bridges. The only bridges on the Grand Canal are the Scalzi Bridge, Rialto and the Accademia Bridge.

2. Sinking of venice

Venice is sinking at the rate of 1-2 millimetres a year. This is due to both man-made causes and natural causes, as the rising sea level.

3. The first public casino in the world

Casino di Venezia was opened in 1638, it’s considered the oldest casino in the world. The building of the casino is also the final resting place of the composer Richard Wagner.

4. 100.000 wooden stilts

Venice is built on wooden piles instead of directly on the surface of the islands. There are over 100.000 wooden stilts beneath the islands, which originally served as the foundations for the fishermen’s houses who founded Venice.

5. Venzuela and Venice

Venezuela, in South America is named after the Italian name of Venice: Venezia. In fact, Venezuela means little Venice in Spanish.
